The Broads

The Norfolk Broads first captured my imagination when as a child I read Arthur Ransome's books 'Coot Club' and 'The Big Six'. My Mum bravely took me as a young teenager for a week on a hired cruiser, and I dreamt from then on of one day returning.

That day arrived in 1992 and since then I've been lucky enough to spend many happy holidays on the Broads

There are quite a number of pictures on this page so it may take a moment or two to load.

One of the most photographed places on the Broads - subject of many a biscuit tin and jigsaw puzzle.

Reinforcing the banks

Old wherries and other craft were sometimes sunk to protect the edges of the broads from erosion.

Typical of natural vegetation at the edge of the Broads, an important habitat for a miriad of wildlife.

Ranworth Church

The 'Cathedral of the Broads' - the view from the tower is breathtaking, as is the spiral staircase that gets you there!!

Stokesby Church

Broadland has many fine churches - this is another example

Cantley

The British Sugar factory at Cantley is visible over a wide area with its distinctive plume of steam

Breydon Water

Breydon Marker Post

These mark the navigable channel across Breydon - outside the posts the water is very shallow. One of these did for Margoletta - if you're intrigued you'll need to read Coot Club!!

Potter Heigham Bridge

Ranworth Staithe

Ranworth Church

A view from Malthouse Broad

Ranworth Conservation Centre

Beyond the centre is Ranworth Broad, not open to boats but filled with wildlife

Stokesby

It's not all water

Wide open vistas and huge skies are also integral to Broadland

Herringfleet Mill

Sunset at Berney Arms

Unfortunately the sails of the mill were taken down, presumably for restoration, some 4 years ago. Must be nearly finished now.....

The waterfront has been extensively improved and re-developed over the last few years
